NFC vs Concentrate – What Importers Need to Know

The distinction between not-from-concentrate (NFC) juice and reconstituted juice from concentrate (FC) is one of the most commercially significant quality differentiators in the global juice market — and one that EU retail buyers, health food store buyers, and premium brand owners have strong commercial opinions about. Understanding this distinction is essential before writing a product brief or evaluating a supply quotation.

NFC juice is pressed directly from fresh fruit, gently pasteurized without removing water, and packaged in its natural state. The juice is never reduced to concentrate and never rehydrated. Reconstituted juice from concentrate (FC) is pressed, heat-evaporated to remove 70–80% of its water content to create a shelf-stable concentrate, transported to a bottling facility, then rehydrated with water before packaging. Both methods produce a shelf-stable juice, but the flavor, aroma, and nutritional profile outcomes are materially different.

FactorNFC (Not-From-Concentrate)FC (From-Concentrate)
ProcessingFresh press → gentle pasteurization → packPress → evaporate → concentrate → rehydrate → pack
Flavor ProfileFresh, complex, full-fruit character retainedCooked or “flat” notes; aroma compounds lost in evaporation
Label Declaration“100% juice, not from concentrate”“100% juice from concentrate” (EU FIC required)
Retail Price PointPremium — typically 30–60% above FC equivalentStandard — commodity pricing pressure
Health Store AcceptanceStrongly preferred — clean label, minimal processingLimited — typically de-listed in favor of NFC at premium independents
Shelf Life (chilled)14–21 days (fresh-chilled) or 6–12 months (pasteurized ambient)12–18 months ambient
EU labeling compliance: Under EU Regulation 1169/2011 (FIC) and EU Fruit Juice Directive 2001/112/EC, juices produced from concentrate must carry the declaration “from concentrate” on label. NFC juice carries no such declaration — a meaningful clean-label advantage in EU health food retail, where consumers actively read and compare ingredient and processing declarations. Interfresh NFC products are produced and labeled in full compliance with EU FIC requirements.

Why Choose Interfresh as Your NFC Juice Manufacturer

Direct Fruit Sourcing in Vietnam

Vietnam’s geographic position — spanning 15 degrees of latitude from the Mekong Delta to the northern highlands — produces commercially significant quantities of mango, pineapple, passion fruit, citrus, and other tropical fruits year-round. Interfresh sources NFC juice fruit directly from contracted growing regions, with defined agronomic protocols and pre-harvest quality checks that ensure consistent Brix, acidity, and microbiological standards at the point of pressing. Short farm-to-factory logistics — typically under 48 hours for domestic fruit supply — minimize oxidation and enzymatic degradation before pressing, which directly improves the flavor profile of the finished NFC juice.

Export Experience for Global Importers

NFC juice export involves additional regulatory complexity compared with concentrate-based products — particularly for EU import, where juice category definitions, NFC labeling declarations, and nutritional panel requirements are strictly governed by the EU Fruit Juice Directive and EU FIC. Interfresh’s export team has navigated EU, Korean, Japanese, and MENA NFC import requirements across multiple product categories. We issue the correct Certificate of Origin (CO Form B under EVFTA for EU buyers) to support preferential duty access, and we review label artwork against destination-market requirements before production.

European Union
EVFTA preferential duty. EU FIC / Juice Directive compliant labeling. CO Form B issued.
Korea & Japan
VKFTA / VJEPA CO support. KFDA-compliant labeling. Established shipping routes.
MENA & Australia

Why NFC Commands a Premium Price

NFC juice commands a 30–60% retail price premium over equivalent FC juice in EU and international health retail channels — and this premium is structurally defensible because it reflects genuine production cost and quality differences that are visible, auditable, and meaningful to the consumer at the point of purchase. Understanding the premium drivers is essential for brand owners building NFC product margin models.

1
Higher Raw Material Cost Per Liter
NFC requires approximately 1.5–2x more fresh fruit per liter of finished product compared with concentrate-based production, because no water is added back. The cost of fresh fruit versus concentrate pricing is reflected directly in the per-unit production cost — and legitimately so in the retail price. EU health food store buyers understand and accept this cost structure; it is the basis of the category premium positioning.
2
Cold Chain Logistics Requirement
Fresh-pasteurized NFC juice — the short-shelf-life format — requires refrigerated (2–4°C) storage and cold chain shipping, adding logistics cost versus ambient-temperature concentrate or ambient-pasteurized juice. Aseptic NFC (ambient shelf-stable) eliminates this cost for international shipment while maintaining the NFC clean-label claim.
3
Clean Label and Minimal Processing Claims
NFC juice carries the most credible “minimal processing” narrative in the juice category. No reconstitution, no added-back aroma packs (which are legally permitted in FC juice production under EU rules), no water addition. This aligns precisely with the consumer quality heuristic driving health food retail growth in Germany, the Netherlands, France, and the Nordic markets — the EU’s highest-value NFC import destinations.
4
Superior Sensory Profile — Flavor & Aroma Retention
The heat evaporation stage in concentrate production drives off volatile flavor and aroma compounds that are responsible for the “fresh-squeezed” character that consumers pay a premium for. NFC avoids this evaporation entirely — the flavor compounds present in the fresh fruit are largely retained through gentle pasteurization. Blind taste tests consistently show consumer preference for NFC over FC at equivalent Brix levels across mango, orange, and passion fruit categories.
NFC Premium in EU Retail — Market Context
NFC juice holds the dominant position in EU premium grocery and health food retail. German Reformhaus, Dutch natural food stores, French biocoop, and UK independent health retailers consistently list NFC above FC at meaningful price premiums. EU private label buyers at premium grocery chains (REWE Bio, Albert Heijn AH Excellent, Waitrose) consistently specify NFC origin as a non-negotiable listing requirement for their premium juice SKUs.

Interfresh NFC Juice Product Portfolio

Our four core NFC juice varieties are available as standard production formulas — each supported by fruit supply agreements with contracted growing regions, defined Brix and acidity specifications, and existing EU export documentation protocols. All four are available as immediately sampable formulas for buyer evaluation before commercial order commitment.

NFC Orange Juice

Highest EU Volume
Dominant NFC category in EU health food retail by volume

NFC orange juice is the largest NFC category in EU retail by both volume and value. Pressed from sweet orange varieties with consistent Brix-acidity balance, Interfresh NFC orange juice delivers the fresh-squeezed sensory profile that EU health food retail consumers benchmark premium orange juice against. No added sugar, no concentrate, no added water — EU Juice Directive compliant for “100% juice, not from concentrate” labeling.

Available in fresh-chilled (short shelf life, 250ml–1L glass) and ambient aseptic (12-month shelf life, glass or Tetra Pak) formats depending on your target channel and logistics model.

NFC Mango Juice

Vietnam Origin Premium
Cát Hòa Lộc and Cát Chu variety mango — high Brix, low fiber NFC

Vietnam-origin NFC mango juice is among the most commercially significant tropical NFC products for EU health food retail and premium grocery. The Cát Hòa Lộc and Cát Chu mango varieties from the Mekong Delta produce NFC juice with exceptional Brix (16–18°Bx natural fruit sugar), deep golden color, and intense aromatic profile — characteristics that differentiate Vietnam-origin NFC mango from Indian or Thai concentrate-based alternatives on shelf and in taste tests.

Available as single-variety or blended NFC mango juice. Viscosity adjustable through production parameters for the buyer’s target format (pourable glass bottle, pouch, or carton). Vitamin C fortification available without affecting NFC labeling status.

NFC Pineapple Juice

Tropical Signature
Fresh-pressed MD2 pineapple from Central Highlands Vietnam

NFC pineapple juice is a high-growth NFC category in EU health food retail, driven by consumer interest in bromelain (pineapple’s natural enzyme), tropical flavor appeal, and the clean-label positioning of NFC over concentrate. Vietnam MD2 pineapple produces NFC juice with a characteristically low acidity and high Brix profile — a naturally sweet, less acidic profile than Thai or Costa Rican pineapple varieties, which positions it well in the health food channel where consumers prefer lower-acid fruit juice.

NFC pineapple works particularly well as a base for NFC blends — pineapple + mango, pineapple + passion fruit, or pineapple + coconut water are all commercially viable private label blend opportunities for EU buyers seeking differentiated NFC SKUs.

NFC Passion Fruit Juice

High-Value Category
Intense aromatic NFC — strong as a blend base or single-variety premium SKU

NFC passion fruit juice is the most intensely flavored NFC product in Interfresh’s portfolio — a small volume of NFC passion fruit produces a powerful aromatic and flavor impact that makes it a premium ingredient in NFC juice blends or a high-value single-variety premium product. The aroma compound complexity of fresh-pressed passion fruit is exceptionally sensitive to heat — making NFC the only format that delivers the full aromatic potential of the fruit. In FC production, up to 80% of the characteristic passion fruit aroma is lost in the evaporation stage.

Particularly popular as an NFC blend component with mango, orange, or pineapple for EU premium private label buyers seeking differentiated flavor profiles that stand out from the NFC orange and mango SKUs already on shelf.

Custom NFC blends: Interfresh develops custom NFC blend formulas — combining two or more of the above NFC varieties, or blending NFC juice with coconut water, aloe vera, or functional ingredients — for private label buyers seeking differentiated SKUs. Custom NFC blend development requires a minimum commercial volume of 1 × 40ft FCL and adds 4–6 weeks for sample development and approval. Contact our R&D team with your blend concept.

Cold-Pressing vs Pasteurization for NFC

Both cold-pressed and pasteurized NFC juices qualify for the “not-from-concentrate” label claim — the NFC declaration relates to the absence of water removal and reconstitution, not to the preservation method used. The choice between cold-pressed (HPP) and heat-pasteurized NFC affects shelf life, cold chain requirement, and price positioning, and should be determined by your target channel before finalizing your product specification.

Fresh / Chilled

Cold-Pressed NFC (HPP)

High Pressure Processing

Juice is pressed and subjected to high hydrostatic pressure (HPP) to inactivate pathogens without heat. No flavor-degrading thermal processing. Maximally fresh sensory profile. Requires refrigerated storage (2–4°C) throughout the supply chain and retail shelf.

Gently Pasteurized NFC

HTST / Flash Pasteurization

Short-time high-temperature (HTST) or flash pasteurization at 85–95°C for 15–30 seconds achieves microbiological safety while minimizing heat impact on flavor and color. The dominant production method for international NFC export due to extended shelf life without cold chain. Packed aseptically into glass, Tetra Pak, or bulk containers for ambient distribution.

Shelf Life Considerations for NFC Juice

Shelf life planning is one of the most commercially critical decisions in NFC juice procurement — particularly for international buyers managing import transit time, warehouse holding, and retail sell-through. The table below illustrates typical achievable shelf life by production method, and the implications for international import logistics from Vietnam.

Production MethodShelf LifeStorage RequirementInternational Logistics Fit
Cold-Pressed HPP NFC14–21 days2–4°C refrigerated throughoutAir freight only — not viable for sea shipment to EU
Flash Pasteurized NFC (chilled pack)60–90 days≤6°C refrigeratedReefer container — limited remaining shelf life at EU destination
Aseptic Pasteurized NFC (ambient)9–12 monthsAmbient (below 25°C)Ideal — standard dry container sea freight
Aseptic NFC Bulk (drum/IBC)12 months (sealed)Ambient (below 25°C)Ideal for industrial buyers — standard container
EU import shelf life planning: Sea freight transit from Vietnam to Rotterdam takes approximately 25–30 days. Adding production and documentation lead time (10–14 days), EU importers receive aseptic pasteurized NFC with approximately 7–8 months of remaining shelf life at port of arrival. This is typically sufficient for standard EU retail channel requirements (6–8 weeks retail sell-through). Buyers with longer downstream distribution chains should confirm remaining shelf life tolerance with their retail buyer before placing the first order.

7

Packaging for NFC Juice

NFC juice packaging choice has a direct impact on shelf positioning, light stability (vitamin C and color stability require light barrier), retail price point expectations, and logistics cost. The three formats below cover the full commercial range from premium health food retail to industrial ingredient supply.

Glass Bottles

EU Health Retail Standard

Glass is the premium NFC juice packaging format for EU health food retail and specialty grocery. Glass is inert — it does not impart flavor or interact with the juice — and it provides a strong visual premium cue on shelf. Dark amber glass (used for HPP cold-pressed NFC) provides light protection for sensitive vitamins and pigments. Clear flint glass (used for ambient aseptic NFC) allows color visibility as a quality signal at the point of sale.

Glass-bottled NFC juice from Interfresh is available in 250ml, 330ml, 500ml, and 750ml formats. Label artwork is printed on pressure-sensitive OPP labels and applied by automated labeling line. Interfresh reviews label artwork against EU FIC labeling requirements before production approval.

Aseptic Cartons (Tetra Pak)

Export & Volume Retail

Aseptic Tetra Pak cartons provide the most favorable combination of shelf life, logistics cost, and retail channel reach for NFC juice exported from Vietnam to EU. The multi-layer carton provides excellent light and oxygen barrier properties — comparable to glass for vitamin C retention — at significantly lower weight and breakage risk than glass for sea freight. Carton formats are widely accepted in EU mainstream grocery retail, foodservice, and single-serve channels.

Available in Tetra Prisma, Tetra Brik Aseptic, and Tetra Fino formats. Print is applied directly to the carton substrate during carton manufacture — your artwork is registered for carton production with a print minimum that aligns with the commercial MOQ.

FAQ for NFC Buyers

What does “not-from-concentrate” mean in practice and on the label?
NFC means the juice has been extracted directly from fresh fruit, pasteurized, and packaged — without any concentration or rehydration step. Under EU Fruit Juice Directive 2001/112/EC and FIC Regulation 1169/2011, this product is labeled “100% [fruit] juice, not from concentrate.” This declaration is a positive quality signal in EU health food retail and is a strict legal requirement if the product is genuinely NFC. Interfresh produces and certifies all NFC products in full compliance with the EU Fruit Juice Directive definition.
Can I get NFC juice with added vitamin C and still use the NFC label claim?
Yes. Under EU rules, vitamin C (ascorbic acid) may be added to fruit juice as a processing aid (to prevent oxidation) and as a nutritional fortification without affecting the NFC label status. Vitamin C-fortified NFC juice can carry both “100% juice, not from concentrate” and a nutrition claim (e.g. “high in vitamin C”) on the label. Interfresh offers vitamin C-fortified NFC juice as a standard option across all four core NFC varieties. Confirm the fortification level and EU nutrition claim wording with our R&D team at the brief stage.
What pesticide residue testing is available for EU import compliance?
Our standard COA does not include pesticide residue screening — this is conducted by our contracted growers under their agronomic protocols. For EU buyers whose retail partners require pesticide residue testing as part of supplier qualification or annual lot release, Interfresh arranges third-party laboratory testing at accredited laboratories in Vietnam (covering EU MRL-regulated pesticide panels per EC Regulation 396/2005). Third-party pesticide testing adds approximately 14–21 days to the production timeline and is quoted separately. Advise our export team of your pesticide testing requirement at the brief stage.
Can I develop a custom NFC blend — for example, orange + passion fruit?
Yes. Custom NFC blends are available for commercial volumes. Provide your target blend ratio, Brix preference, acidity range, and packaging format, and our R&D team will develop a bench sample for your evaluation. Common blend combinations include orange + mango, mango + passion fruit, pineapple + coconut water, and orange + pineapple + passion fruit. Custom blend development adds 4–6 weeks and requires a minimum commercial volume of 1 × 40ft FCL for the custom blend SKU. The resulting formula is protected by NDA and not shared with other buyers.
Does the EVFTA provide a meaningful duty reduction for NFC juice import into the EU?
Yes, materially. The EU standard MFN duty on NFC fruit juice varies by HS code (typically 9.6%–20.4% ad valorem depending on the specific juice category). Under EVFTA, Vietnam-origin NFC juice shipped with CO Form B qualifies for reduced preferential duty rates that have been declining on the EVFTA tariff schedule since the agreement entered into force. The specific applicable rate depends on the HS code classification — confirm with your EU customs broker before the first import. Interfresh issues CO Form B for all EU-bound shipments as standard.
Is bulk NFC juice available for buyers who want to fill under their own brand in their own facility?
Yes. Aseptic bulk NFC juice in 200L food-grade bag-in-drum or 1,000L IBC containers is available for industrial buyers, blenders, and contract bottlers. Full NFC origin traceability and COA per batch are provided with every bulk shipment, enabling buyers to substantiate the NFC claim in their own finished product labeling. Minimum bulk order is 1 × 20ft FCL. Contact our export team with your variety, Brix specification, volume, and destination for a bulk pricing quotation.
